Dooxooyinka Danakil
Salt, sulphur, and the Dallol plain. Trips stage from Mekelle.
The Danakil is one of the hottest places on earth. The route most visitors take leaves Mekelle with a mandatory armed scout and a 4x4, sleeps near the salt flats, and walks the Dallol mounds at dawn: yellow and green mineral crusts around acid pools. The salt caravans still cross the plain toward Lake Assale.
This is not a self-drive. You need an agency, the Afar regional permit, water, and a night that the operator arranges in a simple camp. Book a hotel in Mekelle for the night before departure and the night you return. Do not plan this in the deepest heat without asking the operator that week.
